Box Score Nearly a month ago (January 9), Grambling State University's Lady Tigers were defeated by the Southern University Lady Jaguars. Something happened in four weeks later as those same ladies entered the floor of the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center Saturday (February 6) with one thing on their minds: to win against the same team that defeated them. They did, 65-52.
"Once we were able to run the plays, it put us in a position where we could win," head women's basketball coach Nadine Domond said after the win. "I was only focused on the things that mattered to us, to execute, to win."The momentum for the Lady Tigers began early in the first quarter with never-before-seen shots from
Jazmine Boyd and
John'ea Thompson with
Monisha Neal assisting the two in many of their points scored by halftime. At the half, Boyd had nine and Thompson had seven. Briana Green of Southern had nine points.
As the second half of the game got underway, the Lady Tigers continued to dominate their opponents. This time it was
Shakyla Hill with more from Boyd and Thompson. Domond refers to her team's best defense as their offense; she was right as eight of her thirteen players put up points and stayed in the air, catching a total of 40 rebounds in the last two quarters of the game.
Boyd finished with 17 points and five rebounds, Neal with nine rebounds and five assists and Hill with 14 points and seven rebounds. Green of Southern had 15 points and six rebounds.
The Lady Tigers (10-11 overall, 7-3 SWAC) will play Alcorn State University on Monday (February 8) at 6 p.m. in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
