Grambling, La. (Women's Basketball)- Grambling State University's Monisha "Real Deal" Neal showed out in the Lady Tigers two game road trip to Houston, Texas, earning her Southwestern Athletic Conference player of week honors and eclipsed a new season high in points.
Neal, the week 10 SWACÂ Player of the Week, was highly efficient in the Lady Tigers conference games against Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University, shooting 50 percent from the field in both matchups. Neal, set a new season high in points 19, in the 69-61 loss to TSU.
In the Lady Tigers second game, Neal and Shakyla "Trill" Hill both combined for 30 points, dropping a heartbreaker to Prairie View A&M, 51-49, on Monday night.
After a tough outing in Texas, Grambling is back in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Center hosting the Jackson State University Lady Tigers, Saturday at 3pm.
First season head Coach
Freddie Murray was pleased with his girls play in Houston. "We played well in Houston," said Murray, "We played two great teams in Texas Southern and Prairie View. Basically, both games came down to the final seconds, we just didn't do somethings down the stretch. I was proud of the girls, the way they fought back and we will bounce back against Jackson State this weekend."
"The team tends to play pretty good at home. With the next three games at home we're hoping to get back on the winning streak. They are pretty healthy and understand that we constantly keep giving games away late. That's something we will talk about more in the next few practices and workout. We're going to stress that we have to execute more down the stretch and finish. We just have to learn how to finish when we're up on teams."
GSU (5-12, 3-3 SWAC) faces a Jackson State (7-9, 1-5 SWAC) squad that has struggled on the road losing their first seven of eight away from Jackson. Jackson State is on four game skid splitting losses at home and away. Ironically, Jackson State last win was their first road winning muzzling Alabama A&M University, 64-54.
Kierra Adams and Derica Wiggins are JSU's top scorers. Adams is the only player averaging double digit points 11 and Wiggins averages nearly 10 points per game with 9.9 points.Â
Last season, Grambling State swept the season series 2-0, and handed Jackson State a 14-point loss in the Hobdy Center 75-61. In the last home game of season, Neal registered a game high 17 points, four assist. Hill added nine points and six
assists. Â
"Monisha is playing at an all-conference level this year. We expected that from her now that conference play started. She's pretty much the glue that holds us together, offensively and defensively. So, we are proud of her."Â
