GRAMBLING, La. (Women's Basketball)- Five wins in a row sets the stage for an epic battle between the Grambling State University Lady Tigers and the top ranked conference team, Texas Southern University Lady Tigers at Fredrick C. Hobdy Center on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Texas Southern strolls into town at a time were Grambling State's Shayla Hill is the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the week. Hill posted 12 points, nine assist, three steals in a 70-63, win over bitter rival Southern. In another 67-63, win over Alcorn State, Hill added 13 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and six steals.
Jazmin Torian is starting to emerge as a force in the paint, stating double digit point totals in Grambling State last four games and with the weapons of
Monisha Neal and
Jazmin Boyd, playing big time in big time minutes. Lastly, while Grambling State is clicking as a whole with solid bench production and ranked second in SWAC play.
"We are playing a good brand of basketball right now, getting good production from our starters and from our bench. We are playing for the next person, we understand the stage, we understand where we are in the race in the SWAC and leaving it on the court night in and night out," said Interim head coach
Freddie Murray.
"
Shakyla Hill, that kid, is all conference right now. She was kind of upset last year, when she felt she got overlooked. She came into this reason with a revenge. She's playing that way night end and night out and we wouldn't be in this position without here," Murray added.
???????Grambling State fell to Texas Southern 69-61, January 14, in Houston. The Lady Tigers battled for 38 minutes till a late turnover shifted the monument to Texas Southern. Texas Southern erased a 58-53, deficit to tie the contest at 61 with 2:02 left. Neal scored 19 points in the ball game with four assist, Hill added nine points, four assists and Boyd finished with eight points.
To getting over the hump and beating Texas Southern, Murray said its simple, they have to finish.
"We just have to finish, just finish. I look back at that game and we led for 35 minutes, from start till the five-minute mark in the fourth quarter. We just faltered down the stretch. We just have to finish and play a full 40 minutes. I think we will get that effort on Friday," quipped Murray.Â
On Monday, the Lady Tigers welcome the Prairie View A & M University Lady Panthers at 5 p.m. to the Fredrick C. Hobdy Center.
???????Grambling State led by two baskets early in the fourth quarter 40-36, but the Lady Panthers slipped away defeating GSU, 51-49, in Houston on Jan. 16. Grambling State, down with a 50-47, had an opportunity to tie the game, Hill drove the lane forced a three-point play. Hill made the layup through contact to but missed the free throw to tie the game. Hill and Neal combined for 30 points and Hill included five assists and three steals.
