GRAMBLING, La. (Women's basketball) – With the win over No. 8 Mississippi Valley State University on Tuesday evening, the No. 1 Grambling State University Lady Tiger basketball team signed their ticket to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Basketball Tournament in Houston, Texas.
Monisha Neal showed her prowess in the quarterfinal match with the Devilettes. The sophomore guard led GSU in scoring with 22 points, tied for most rebounds with eight. All-SWAC First Team selection
Shakyla Hill finished the night with the second highest point total with 19 points.
Grambling will play No. 4 and in-state rival Southern University in the SWAC Tournament on Friday, March 10 at noon in the Toyota Center in a semi-final contest.
During the season, the Lady Tigers split with the Lady Jags. Grambling dropped the Jan. 7 contest with a score of 71-68 and won the road game to the tune of 70-63.
The Lady Tigers crashed the boards and came away with 38 rebounds. In their last contest against SU, Grambling was led by Hill with 22 points,
Jazmin Boyd with 18 points, and Neal with 16 points. Hill and
John'ea Thompson tied for most rebounds with six each.
Southern comes into the game after a 73-67 win over Alcorn State University. For Grambling to come away with the win, the team must contain Miaya Crowder. Against the Lady Braves, Crowder posted a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. The last time Grambling saw Crowder exploded with 20 points. GSU will have to watch out for Cortnei Purnell as she is the leading rebounder for the Lady Jaguars averaging almost six per game. In the Lady Tigers last meeting with Purnell, she grabbed a team high 10 boards. The perimeter will have to be taken care of by the GSU guards as Skylar O'Bear leads SU in three pointers with 42 on the season.
